On Thursday 2nd July, our Year 12 A Level Economics and Business students had the privilege of welcoming Lavnish Naggea, Major Transactions at the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), Bank of England, for an engaging and insightful guest lecture.
The session provided students with a valuable opportunity to see how the economic concepts they study in the classroom are applied in the real world. Lavnish explored the vital role of the Bank of England in maintaining monetary and financial stability, explaining how decisions on inflation, interest rates and financial regulation impact individuals, businesses and the wider UK economy. Students also gained an insight into the work of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), including how they help to ensure the resilience of the UK’s financial system.
Throughout the presentation, students deepened their understanding of key A Level topics such as inflation targeting, Bank Rate, quantitative easing and financial regulation. Real-life examples and case studies, including the resolution of Silicon Valley Bank UK, demonstrated how economic theory underpins important policy decisions and protects the stability of the financial sector.
Lavnish also shared insights into his own career journey and the diverse range of opportunities available within the Bank of England, highlighting apprenticeships, graduate pathways and careers in economics, finance and regulation. His advice gave students an excellent understanding of the skills and experiences required to succeed in the financial sector, while reinforcing the relevance of their A Level studies to future careers.
The session concluded with an engaging question-and-answer segment, where students asked thoughtful questions about current economic challenges, monetary policy and career opportunities within the Bank of England.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Lavnish Naggea and the Bank of England for taking the time to inspire our students. Opportunities such as these bring learning beyond the classroom, helping students connect academic theory with real-world practice while broadening their aspirations for the future.
